The fifties of the nineteenth century are the time of the second republic in France. All works of literature and painting are about French folks. One of the acclaimed artists of the time was Francois-Marie Firmin-Girard.

The masterpiece before your eyes - "Sunday in the Bas-Meudon." It is an open-air restaurant in the forest. The tranquillity of the water contrasts with the lively crowd of people. A musician covered with drums and bells with a flute tied to his chin plays a wheeled lyre. Notable artists, after a walk in the woods and a swim in the Seine, meet in this place. They sit at tables overlooking the Seine and the islands. The author himself is among them.

The artist describes every detail with the utmost care. From the folds of the tablecloth to the red umbrella of the farthest figure. He emphasizes the changing color of the leaves on the banks of the Seine. With immense pleasure, the maestro conveys to us the fresh smell of the forest and water. Not a single moment of sheer enjoyment of nature, delicious food, music, and life itself was missed!
