Waterhouse portrayed women in opposition to the canons of beauty accepted in art at the time.
Instead of puffy faces and maternal bodies, he painted slender and tall women. They are assertive and commanding, with a direct and confident gaze. The real sun of female freedom in the world is still very far away. But it primary rays are already slipping through the darkness.
